Whats It Like To Be Warehouse Assistant
The warehouse assistant job is based in either Nantes or Avignon with contracts starting as early on in the year as January and often running through to October or November. Your accommodation will come in the form of company rented flats or a mobile home all to yourself on a campsite in the centre of Nantes! The flats are fully equipped with televisions, radios, comfy living areas, bedrooms and everything you will need to rustle up a bit of French cuisine in the kitchen. All you would need to bring with you would be your personal possessions, clothes and a sleeping bag.
As warehouse assistant you would be working a standard working week, Monday to Friday, 9-5.00, with occasional weekend work. The majority of your time will be warehouse based, however during busy periods (montage and demontage) there will be van runs all over Europe delivering and collecting stock needed for the forthcoming or just finished season. Occasionally these van runs will involve spending the night on site if the distance is too far, enabling you to meet up with couriers, Area Managers and even customers.
The work in the warehouse is team based, although sometimes you will be expected to work on your own completing various tasks or driving to site. At busy times you will be working with up to 6 or 7 others, of varying ages nationalities and of varying character. English is spoken in the warehouses, so need to worry if your French isn’t up to scratch. There will always be someone to help you if you get into a pickle with the language!! A few basics would always help, for when you are on your own, for example taking public transport, in the supermarket or simply ordering a drink in a bar.
The main responsibilities of a warehouse assistant are to ensure stock orders are correctly dealt with, working from pick sheets, with all this being organised correctly for you to then deliver in time for campsite opening dates. Be aware that the work can be very physical at times especially in the high temperatures of the summer months, and especially when an articulated lorry turns up to be emptied or loaded.
The warehouse assistant job is not one to be missed, with the opportunity of living in what are two vibrant, lively French cities, soaking up the atmosphere, culture and even learning the language. And not to forget the weather is a lot better than in the UK.
